Eugene Talmadge held the office of
Governor of Georgia four times in the 1940’s. He was elected
again in 1946, but passed away before taking office. The Eugene Talmadge
Memorial Bridge, named to honor the former politician, crosses over
the Savannah River between Georgia and South Carolina. Originally built
in 1953, the bridge was reconstructed in November of 1990 to accommodate
the large ships entering the port in Savannah, the largest single terminal
container port on the United States eastern seaboard. |
