Telfair Owens Thomas HouseThe Owens-Thomas House was the first Regency Mansion built by the then young architect William Jay and is considered to be one of the finest examples of that style of architecture in the United States. Completed in 1819, the English house was constructed mostly with local materials and was remarkable because of its curving walls, Greek-inspired ornamental molding, half-moon arches, stained-glass panels, and furniture. Today, people from around the world come to be inspired by the beauty that abounds throughout this historic house. Tours begin in the Carriage house which includes one of the earliest urban slave quarters with the original furnishings and "haint-blue" paint made by the slave occupants. There’s a lovely English garden beyond the courtyard which is also a delightful spot to see. At the stable side of the home there is a Museum Shop and Regional Art Gallery. While touring through the main house, notice the brass inlaid staircase, with a unique bridge spanning the central stairwell, a Greek-key patterned window of amber glass in the dining room, and the divine effect of the drawing room ceiling. For those with an interest in history, art and architecture, Telfair’s Owens-Thomas House is not to be missed.
