Built in 1890 to serve as the officer’s quarters for the navy, the lovely wooden duplex sat on the waterfront in Key West. Harry S. Truman, in search of a winter home and a place to recuperate and relax, made the Little White House his second home, spending 175 days there. Truman fell in love with Key West, enjoyed fishing, playing golf and having friends visit. The house was so alluring that John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter also stayed there on various occasions. Its historic significance is especially intriguing as the Little White House was the setting for many important political meetings and the Department of Defense was actually conceived in one of the rooms. Today, the Little White House holds a special place in our nation’s history and offers visitors a chance to roam room to room, to see items that belonged to Harry, Bess and Margaret, to view the dining room and other areas of the house. Guided by local historians, the tour offers a glimpse into the life of Truman and the legacy of the Little White House he cherished so much. |
