Although it is one of the more somber spots in the area, the Arlington National Cemetery is visited by 4 million people each year. Some visit out of respect for America’s fallen war heroes, others come to see the final resting place of the 300,000 people who gave their life to serve their country and many more come to say goodbye to a loved one or friend. Throughout the over 600 acres, white tombstones mark the graves of the distinguished people buried in Arlington. Among them, President John F. Kennedy and his family and General John Pershing and the crew of the Challenger Space Shuttle. The Tomb of the Unknowns, a memorial to the many unknown soldiers who were killed in World War I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War is one of the most visited areas in the cemetery. Over 3000 freed slaves are also buried here, their graves marked “citizen” or “civilian” to differentiate them from the others. Veterans from all of America’s Wars are buried in Arlington, beginning with the American Revolution and continuing through Iraq and Afghanistan. Close to a hundred funerals are held in Arlington each week, so it’s possible that you may witness one while you’re on the grounds. A sign at the front of the park reminds guests to be aware that these are hallowed grounds and to act with dignity and respect while visiting. The Arlington Memorial Amphitheater is a gorgeous gathering place where many official ceremonies are held to honor those in the service. To make the most of your visit, stop by the Visitor’s Center for a map, brochure and information of the many different aspects of the cemetery. |
