West Houston Street

8 Stop 8
San Antonio West Houston Street

West Houston Street has been part of San Antonio’s story since the mid-1800s. It began as a dirt road called El Paseo before being renamed for Sam Houston, one of Texas’ most recognized historical figures. Over time, it grew into one of downtown’s most active streets for shopping, dining, and entertainment.

By the early 1900s, West Houston Street was a center of city life. Streetcars once carried residents and visitors here to shop and attend performances. The Majestic Theatre opened in 1929 and was one of the first air-conditioned theaters in Texas. Many of the buildings along this corridor reflect the Beaux-Arts and Art Deco styles that defined early downtown San Antonio.

A short walk away, the Buckhorn Saloon & Texas Ranger Museum and the Briscoe Western Art Museum both share pieces of Texas history through exhibits and collections. West Houston Street also connects to the River Walk, Main Plaza, and San Fernando Cathedral, placing it in the heart of the city’s historic and cultural core.
