Conch Republic Independence Celebration
Multiple locations
Every year, the Florida Keys celebrates their status as a country within a country by hosting an event dedicated to the independence of their self-proclaimed country, the Conch Republic! The Conch Republic was formed back in 1982 when the mayor of Key West and several residents banded together to protest against the imposing of U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints that forced all traffic entering or leaving the Florida Keys (the island chain off the coast of Florida connecting mainland United States with mainland Cuba) to pass through inspections.
