Visit Historic Landmarks
Founded in 1565 as a Spanish military outpost, St. Augustine’s rich and colorful history is at the forefront on St. George Street. Visit the Pena-Peck House, which was constructed in 1750 by order of the King of Spain and remains one of the finest surviving First Spanish Period homes in the area. Guided tours are available seven days a week. Next, check out the Oldest Wooden School House. Located near the City Gates, the house was built more than 200 years ago out of cedar and cypress wood and offers a glimpse of school life in Spanish Colonial times. There’s also the Cathedral Basilica, located between St. George and Charlotte Streets. This beautiful historic landmark is the oldest church in Florida.

Explore the Local Shops

If shopping is more your speed, then you’re in luck. Many of the large, historic buildings in this 11-block stretch have been subdivided into an array of shops and art galleries. Make sure you leave plenty of time for St. George’s Row, The Spanish Plaza and Heritage Walk. These small gallerias house old-fashioned candy stores, clothing boutiques and outdoor stands offering handmade trinkets and souvenirs.

Taste the Local Cuisine

You’re sure to work up an appetite as you meander this historic walking mall. There are dozens of restaurants, outdoor cafes and rooftop pubs to choose from. Some of the local favorites along St. George Street include Columbia Restaurant where the “1905” salad is recommended, Florida Cracker Café which is very family-friendly and Bunnery Bakery & Café which serves excellent coffee and breakfast items.

Experience the Nightlife

St. George Street also has a thriving nightlife scene that attracts both visitors and locals alike. The Mill Top Tavern is a great place to grab a beer. They offer live music seven days a week and a deck view of the Castillo de San Marcos. Next, head to the Colonial Quarter, which houses the Bull & Crown Publick House and Taberna del Caballo. Both historic watering holes offer two-for-one happy hour.

Be a Pirate for the Day

Located a few steps from St. George Street is the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. Just one of many family-friendly attractions that the area has to offer, the museum has more than 300 years of pirate treasure and artifacts on display including one of only three remaining authentic Jolly Rogers flags in the world.

Celebrate the City’s History

No matter when you plan your St. George Street visit, chances are good that you’ll be able to experience one of the many festivals and events on this pedestrian-only thoroughfare. The annual British Night Watch parade takes place in December and Sir Francis Drake’s Raid, a historically accurate reenactment of a battle between English and Spanish soldiers, occurs each June.
